The race was the second of eight rounds of the World Endurance Championship and the 60th running of the race at Spa-Francorchamps. Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most challenging race tracks in the world, mainly because of its fast, hilly and twisty nature. With an elevation change of 102.2 meters from lowest to highest point, the track records the greatest elevation difference of all World Championship races. Teams traditionally view the race as a test run for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
