Charlotte - Coca-Cola 600
The Coca-Cola 600 is an annual 600-mile NASCAR Cup Series points race held at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. It is the longest race on NASCAR's schedule and since 1960 has remained NASCAR's toughest test of man and machine. The 1.5-mile oval has an asphalt racing surface with 24 degrees of banking in the turns and 5 degrees of banking on the straightaways. The track first opened in 1960 when the Cup Series held its inaugural race there and Joe Lee Johnson won. The race is the longest regularly-scheduled automobile race conducted on an oval track anywhere in the world. The race is the second of four crown jewel races of the NASCAR season. The event was started as an attempt by NASCAR to stage a Memorial Day weekend event that would rival the open-wheel Indianapolis 500.
